The Hidden Cost of Parasites in Pig Production: Why Strategic Oral Deworming Matters

A pig does not need to look severely sick to be affected by parasites.

Internal worms, lice and mange mites can gradually interfere with an animal’s comfort, appetite, nutrient utilization and growth. Because the damage often develops slowly, parasite problems may remain unnoticed until farmers begin seeing uneven body weights, rough-looking pigs, persistent scratching or disappointing production performance.

Effective parasite control is therefore not simply about treating visibly sick animals. It should be part of a planned herd-health and farm-management program.

Parasites Are More Than a Health Problem

Parasites survive by taking nutrients, blood or other resources from their host. Even when they do not immediately cause death, they can create a continuing burden on the animal.

A pig carrying a significant parasite load may have to use part of its energy to cope with irritation, tissue damage and inflammation instead of using that energy for normal growth and body development.

  • Slow or uneven weight gain

These signs are not exclusive to parasites. Respiratory disease, bacterial infections, nutritional deficiencies, poor feed quality and inadequate housing can produce similar symptoms. Proper assessment is therefore important before assuming that every poorly growing pig simply needs a dewormer.

The Economic Cost Is Often Hidden in Feed Performance

Feed is normally one of the largest expenses in pig production. Farmers expect the nutrients in every kilogram of feed to support maintenance, growth and eventual market weight.

When parasites interfere with normal health and nutrient utilization, pigs may require more time and feed to reach their target weight. Even a moderate reduction in growth performance can affect:

  • Feed cost per kilogram of gain
  • Number of days required to reach market weight
  • Uniformity of pigs sold as a group
  • Use of pen space and farm facilities
  • Scheduling of the next production batch
  • Overall profitability per pig

This is why parasite control should not be considered an isolated veterinary expense. When properly planned, it forms part of protecting the farmer’s investment in feed, labor, housing and genetics.

Kidney worms

Agmectin is indicated against Stephanurus dentatus, commonly known as the swine kidney worm. This parasite can cause internal tissue damage during its migration and development.

Lungworms

The product information includes adult Metastrongylus species. Lungworm infection may contribute to coughing and respiratory difficulty, particularly in pigs raised outdoors or in environments where earthworms can participate in the parasite’s life cycle.

Hog lice

The hog louse, Haematopinus suis, is a blood-feeding external parasite. Affected pigs may experience irritation, restlessness and skin damage from repeated rubbing or scratching.

Sarcoptic mange mites

Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis causes sarcoptic mange in pigs. The condition can produce severe itching, skin irritation, crust formation and reduced animal comfort.

Agmectin should not be assumed to control every parasite. Ivermectin does not automatically replace treatments intended for coccidia, tapeworms, liver flukes or other organisms not included on the product label.

Why Oral Deworming Can Be Practical for Pig Farms

Injectable ivermectin remains an important veterinary option, but individual injections require pigs to be caught or restrained one at a time. They also require suitable syringes, clean needles, correct injection technique and proper disposal of used sharps.

An oral feed-based product can offer several operational advantages.

Less handling stress

Pigs do not need to be individually caught and injected when medication can be administered through a controlled portion of feed. This can reduce stress and physical struggling, especially when treating larger groups.

No injection-site injury

Oral treatment avoids needle punctures, broken needles, accidental needlestick injuries and localized reactions associated with incorrect or contaminated injections.

Easier treatment of groups

Pigs of similar body weight can be grouped and given a carefully prepared amount of medicated feed. This may make routine herd deworming more manageable for small, medium-sized and commercial farms.

Reduced equipment requirements

Farmers do not need automatic injectors, replacement needles or sharps-disposal containers for oral administration.

Oral treatment is not automatically superior in every situation. A pig that is seriously ill, separated from the group or refusing feed may not consume an adequate oral dose. Such animals should be evaluated individually, and a veterinarian may recommend another treatment route.

The Most Important Rule: Every Pig Must Consume Its Correct Dose

The effectiveness of an oral dewormer depends on more than mixing a sachet into a feeder.

Every treated pig must receive enough medicine for its body weight. If the medicated feed is distributed unevenly, dominant pigs may eat more while smaller, weaker or shy pigs receive less.

Underdosing can lead to incomplete treatment. Repeated underdosing can also increase selection pressure for parasites that are less susceptible to ivermectin.

For more dependable oral administration:

  1. Estimate body weights accurately.
    Weigh the pigs when possible or use a reliable weight-estimation method.
  2. Group pigs according to size.
    Avoid treating very small and very large pigs as though they require the same amount.
  3. Premix the product carefully.
    Mix Agmectin first into a small quantity of feed before blending it into the full medicated portion. This helps achieve more even distribution.
  4. Use a controlled amount of feed.
    The medicated portion should be small enough to be completely consumed before the animals receive their remaining ration.
  5. Watch the pigs while they eat.
    Look for animals that are being pushed away from the feeder or that have poor appetite.
  6. Treat non-eating pigs separately.
    Do not assume that a sick pig has received its dose simply because medicated feed was placed in the pen.
  7. Follow the current label.
    Use the dosage, treatment duration, repeat schedule and slaughter-withdrawal period printed on the Agmectin packaging.

Never increase the dose simply because an animal appears heavily infested. Excessive dosing does not replace proper diagnosis and can increase the risk of adverse effects.

When Should a Farm Consider Deworming?

There is no single schedule that perfectly fits every farm. Parasite exposure is influenced by housing, sanitation, stocking density, animal source, previous treatment, outdoor access and the parasite history of the farm.

When new pigs arrive

Newly purchased pigs can introduce worms, lice or mange mites into a previously controlled herd. Incoming animals should be quarantined, inspected and managed according to the farm’s parasite-control protocol before being mixed with resident pigs.

Before moving pigs into cleaned facilities

Treating animals but immediately returning them to heavily contaminated pens can result in reinfection. Strategic treatment may be most useful when coordinated with cleaning, drying and movement into a cleaner environment.

When a group shows suspicious signs

Persistent scratching, crusted skin, coughing, rough coats or poor growth may justify further investigation. Treatment should be based on likely parasites rather than using dewormers as a solution for every unexplained production problem.

As part of the breeding-herd program

Sows, gilts and boars can act as continuing sources of parasite exposure. Breeding-stock programs should be planned with a veterinarian or qualified swine technician, particularly when treatment may occur close to breeding, farrowing or lactation.

Before parasite levels become severe

Waiting until pigs are visibly thin or extensively affected by mange allows more production loss and environmental contamination to occur. Prevention and early control are usually more practical than waiting for a major infestation.

Deworming Without Sanitation Leads to Reinfection

Ivermectin acts on susceptible parasites in or on the animal. It does not disinfect the pen, remove manure or destroy every parasite stage already present in the environment.

Roundworm eggs, for example, can persist in contaminated environments. Mange mites and lice may also continue spreading through direct contact between untreated and treated animals.

A stronger control program combines treatment with:

  • Regular manure removal
  • Thorough cleaning of pens and equipment
  • Adequate drying between production batches
  • All-in, all-out production where practical
  • Quarantine of incoming pigs
  • Control of rodents and other possible carriers
  • Avoidance of overcrowding
  • Inspection of breeding animals
  • Treatment of the appropriate contact groups
  • Prevention of contact between clean and contaminated equipment

Treating only the animals showing the worst symptoms may leave untreated carriers in the herd. Whether the whole group must be treated depends on the parasite, the degree of contact and veterinary recommendations.

Avoid Unnecessary and Repeated Use

Using the same dewormer too frequently without checking whether treatment is needed can contribute to drug resistance.

Warning signs of a possible treatment failure include:

  • Parasite signs continuing after correctly administered treatment
  • Repeated infestations shortly after treatment
  • Poor response despite accurate weight-based dosing
  • Similar failures occurring in several properly treated animals

Treatment failure does not always mean resistance. Incorrect mixing, inaccurate weight estimates, insufficient feed consumption, reinfection and misdiagnosis are common possibilities.

When a product appears to be losing effectiveness, farmers should not simply repeat the dose or use a larger amount. A veterinarian may recommend fecal examination, skin scraping, review of treatment practices or use of a different antiparasitic class.

Observe the Slaughter-Withdrawal Period

Food-animal medicines require a withdrawal period so that drug residues can decline to permitted levels before meat enters the food supply.

Available Agmectin product information lists a withdrawal period before slaughter, but the farmer must follow the period printed on the exact package being used. Withdrawal requirements can differ among brands, formulations and countries.

Record the following information every time the product is administered:

  • Date treatment started
  • Date treatment was completed
  • Product name and batch number
  • Animals or pens treated
  • Estimated body weights
  • Amount of product used
  • Earliest permitted slaughter date
  • Name of the person who prepared the medication

Good treatment records protect both the farmer and the consumer.

A Practical Component of Better Swine Management
