Average Daily Gain (ADG) Calculator

The Average Daily Gain (ADG) Calculator is a performance monitoring tool that measures how much weight a pig gains each day over a given period. ADG is one of the most important indicators of growth performance because it shows how quickly pigs are reaching their target market weight. Faster, healthy growth generally results in shorter production cycles, improved barn utilization, and lower production costs per kilogram of pork produced.

To use the calculator, enter the starting weight, current or final weight, and the number of days between the two weight measurements. The calculator will automatically determine the total weight gain and compute the Average Daily Gain (ADG).

An ADG calculator is particularly useful for evaluating performance under controlled conditions:

  • Compare different feed products using the same hog breed and similar management practices. A higher ADG indicates that pigs are growing faster, helping evaluate the effectiveness of different feeding programs.
  • Compare different hog breeds or genetic lines using the same feed program. This helps identify breeds with superior growth potential and production efficiency.
  • Monitor the performance of individual production batches over time. Significant changes in ADG may indicate issues with nutrition, health, housing, water availability, or environmental conditions that require attention.

For meaningful comparisons, variables such as pig health, age, sex, stocking density, housing, water supply, and management practices should remain as consistent as possible.

Formula

ADG = Weight Gain (kg) ÷ Number of Days

Interpreting the Results

  • Higher ADG generally indicates faster growth and more efficient production.
  • Lower ADG may suggest that pigs are not reaching their growth potential due to factors such as inadequate nutrition, disease, poor genetics, environmental stress, or management problems.

While a high ADG is desirable, it should always be evaluated alongside the Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR). A feeding program that produces rapid growth but requires substantially more feed may not be the most profitable. The best production systems achieve both a high ADG and a low FCR, allowing pigs to reach market weight quickly while using feed efficiently.
